The Post and Courier Editorial Board Endorses Tamara Curry for Probate Judge
The Post and Courier’s editorial board says it generally steers clear of endorsing in county courthouse races, since it believes those jobs should be filled by hire rather than by election. But it says one candidate in a race is sometimes so clearly the stronger choice that the board feels it has to speak up. This year, it did.
The board describes Tamara Curry as well qualified. She is an attorney who spent 24 years as Charleston County’s Associate Probate Judge, and in 2017 she served as president of the National College of Probate Judges. The editorial notes that it is not unusual for the board to back an incumbent when his opponent lacks the experience for the job. This time, it says, the challenger has both the credentials and the experience, because she has already done the work.
The board also points to concerns about how the current office has been managed, including county audit findings and the judgment of the incumbent, and says those concerns, together with Tamara’s record, make her the better choice for Charleston County families.
